You've got just a few minutes of peace before you
have to get in your car and fight the traffic and aggravation to
work. You take your coffee out to the deck, draw in a deep breath
and relax in the early morning freshness. A squirrel hops across
the lawn, stopping every few feet to sniff at the ground. A
couple of rabbits munch on the clover over by your woodpile.
Birds hidden in the branches begin to sing as they awaken to
start their day. Already at your bird feeder you count a male and
female cardinal and three morning doves. What an idyllic setting. What a wonderful way to start your day!
Unfortunately, whether such a setting is truly idyllic depends on points of view. You, of course, enjoy the surroundings, but the animals are wary. And with good reasons- because your presence can make their lives perilous.
We humans can unknowingly cause problems for these creatures. Every year hundreds of acres of land in our area are cleared for shopping centers, office buildings and housing developments. This is at the expense of untold numbers of nests, burrows and dens.
As the amount of uninhabited land decreases, wildlife are forced to share more of their environment with us. This can upset the delicate balance of nature because, everyday, animals must contend with dangers emanating from our lifestyles. They can quickly become the "presents" the cat brings us after we let it out to prowl. The radio antenna on a car brings in from far away but, at thirty miles-an-hour, can break or sever a wing. A BB gun as a birthday present can be just as deadly as a real rifle. Mother nature causes problems, too, as she rocks baby birds out of their nests to the ground below during a thunderstorm.

If you don't have time to become a rehabber, please let us keep you informed of what we are doing by becoming a member of WWI. We will send you a periodic newsletter which will include tips on what to do if you find an injured or orphaned animal, will focus on a specific story, and let you know what you can do to enhance your home to attract wildlife.
Our membership categories are listed below. All supporters will receive our newsletter. And please remember, all donations are tax deductible. Your donation will help to purchase bulk quantities of food and medicine. Each rehabilitator uses his or her own resources to pay for the care of the wildlife he or she is trying to save.
The time you are sitting outside enjoying the wildlife in your yard, remember there is something you can do to return that pleasure!
